In Concert with the Cedar Simple Truss, Dangerous Drive
After passing Cedar Mountain Road, the line proceeded down grade for about a mile and a half on its way to Indian. As the line continues to Indian, the grade begins to level off. Just around the bend and looking back to the West, this is one of the closest points of contact for the line and the Cedar River. Station Sign Indian was just east of this point. Indian was the location of the famous Indian John #1 mine, which operated from the early 1900's to 1937. About 2.5 miles west of Maple Valley, the line crosses the Cedar once again at station sign Cedar Mountain. Typical Milwaukee through truss bridge with electrical line mast. Signs of age and wear are clearly evident in this shot. The fencing is to protect riders and joggers on the John Wayne Trail. A nice vantage point to admire the speed of the Cedar's current. Signs of non-indigenous life are everywhere, a sad case regardless. There are two simple truss bridges just east where station sign Stevens was located. Just after taking this photo, a near head-on crash occurred as two wayward drivers nearly had a cornfield meet right under this truss. Next stop Maple Valley Junction.
