Milwaukee Maple Valley Depot Slipping Under Highway 18 Another skip over the Cedar Black Diamond Line Abutment on Cedar River Aerial View of Bridges and Line Proximity John Wayne makes for Bikerider Heaven
Looking due west from the Maple Valley Depot Site. This photo, circa 1962, shows a Milwaukee manifest freight picking up orders in Maple Valley. Photo courtesy Washington State Historical Society. Located at the corner of SW 214th St and Highway 169 (Maple Valley Highway), the Junction can be seen at the site of the placeholder. The line split here and the branch ran to Franklin through Black Diamond. The mainline continues east to the mountains. Long demolished, the site of the MV depot is shown by the yellow box. All that remains of the former Maple Valley Depot are these old pilings that supported the South Wall. This view is from the site of the old Depot. Looking due east, you see Highway 18. To the left is the Mainline, the Black Diamond Line has been replaced by the parking area of the John Wayne Trail. After paralleling Highway 169 for about 10 miles, the roadbed crosses under the newly expanded Highway 18 and turns south into Maple Valley. This view is due west. The roadbed crosses under Highway 169, just east of the Hwy 18 underpass and continues Southeast. Completing the turn South, the roadbed almost appears out of nowhere in this shot. Milwaukee was famous for its use of through truss bridges, here is an example. This shot is looking east from Hwy 169. Notice the folks under the bridge. With Hwy 169 running parallel, you can clearly see the remnants of the abutments for the Cedar River bridge crossing of the Black Diamond Line. In the days of the old Columbia and Puget Sound RR, this line was heavily used hauling coal from the various mines. This Google Earth view of the Mainline and the Black Diamond Sub details where the two bridges were in proximity to each other at this point. The preceding picture of the Sub's bridge abutments was taken on the North side of the old bridge. The Milwaukee line has long been converted to part of the John Wayne Trail and is constantly being developed and added to under Washington's "Rails to Trails" program. Just south of the Cedar River, the line crossed over Witte Road.
